Waldorf Astoria New York

The Difficult Immediately, the Impossible will take just a few moments longer.

On March 8, 1929, Lucius Boomer (then owner of the Waldorf Astoria Hotel) announced that a new Waldorf Astoria would be built on Park Avenue from 49th to 50th Streets and would be ready for occupancy in the fall of 1931. Because the best and brightest were needed to get the job done, Lucius Boomer turned to the engineers of Thompson Starrett Inc. (engineers of the Woolworth Building and the Worlds Fair Concourse in 1964) and architects Leonard Schultz and Fullerton Weaver.

Both companies recognized the mission of building the world’s largest hotel was no small feat to achieve; their first task was transferring the power station for the New York…

LAS VEGAS (AP) – GM says it will start outfitting most Chevrolet vehicles with 4G cellular capabilities in partnership with AT&T. The technology will let drivers make phone calls and allow passengers to surf the Web without burning through the voice and data limits on their phone plans.

General Motors Co. said at the International CES gadget show Sunday that the 2015 model year Chevrolet Corvette, Impala, Malibu and Volt will be the first to come equipped with the capabilities this year, followed by the Equinox, Silverado, Silverado HD, Spark and Spark EV.

While the hardware will be standard, pricing plans have yet to be announced.

The cellular capability will be integrated with GM’s OnStar roadside assistance service. OnStar currently costs upward of $199 a year and has more than 6 million subscribers.

After a brief appearance earlier this week, Google’s official iOS support app for Google Glass has re-entered the App Store. MyGlass for iOS lets users set up their head-mounted computer, screencast their field of view, add new Glassware apps, manage contacts and get directions.

MyGlass originally got pulled when it came out ahead of official support being built into Glass itself. Glass got an update for its firmware, XE 12, shortly after the original launch of the MyGlass app, which made everything work smoothly and explains why MyGlass has now returned to the App Store.

Essentially MyGlass for iOS does what MyGlass for Android does – but it’s taken Google a bit longer to roll out support for Apple’s mobile devices. Prior to the launch of MyGlass for iOS, users could still pair Glass with an iPhone and use it, but it lacked much of the advanced functionality available…

shazam-auto-iosI’ve always been a bit perplexed by Shazam, the app that listens to music and other media and (hopefully) identifies it. That alone can be useful, especially when you’re out somewhere and trying to figure out the name of a song playing in the background, or the artist performing said song. Problem is, it always took so darn long for Shazam to start up that it rarely had the time to listen to a sufficient portion of the tune I desperately needed to name. Now the makers of Shazam have figured out a way to speed up that process — by always having the app listening to your every sound, even when the phone is locked.

TORONTO – A Montreal-based tech startup aims to free users from the confines of their smartphones by creating the first ever virtual smartphone platform for Android users, allowing customers to make calls and send texts from another device.

PPLConnect, which launched its open beta on the Google Play app store Thursday, allows Android owners to create an account that links their smartphone to its virtual platform via an app.

Users can then access their phone’s capabilities and contacts through Google Chrome on a desktop computer, tablet, or other mobile device to send and receive calls and SMS text messages.

Co-founders Denzil D’Sa and Jenviev Azzolin told Global News they came up with the idea for the startup while working at an office located near Montreal’s international airport. They noticed that if co-workers forgot their smartphones at home they were willing to make the hour-long commute back into the city just…
